Make Chess All-Present
You can teach your child chess by making it part of your everyday life as a child.
As a child, I was surrounded at home by guitars. My aunts, uncles, parents and grandparents were musicians and singers. They were my role models. Since I could play a guitar at any time, I found it easy to gravitate towards it. The guitar was always nearby if I wanted to play a new chord or learn something. Each small victory made it fun to play guitar. The same learning process can also be applied to chess.
Be a Role Model
Begin by playing with your child chess. It is easier than you may realize. It’s easy to keep a working chess board in an area of your home that is accessible to curious children as they pass. Keep chess instructional books and art that relates to chess in your home. Encourage your child to join a chess club at school, or in the community. You can host chess-themed parties or invite your friends and relatives to play at your house. Have a travel-sized chess set that you can take with you on long road trips and encourage your kids to use it. Make chess a regular habit in your child’s daily life.
Start by teaching your child the basics of the game. Then, as you would with reading, encourage your child to become more sophisticated and understand.
The Pawn Game
* Position the pawn-chess pieces on a chessboard. Then, see which player can get most pieces to the opposing side.
* Pawns move forward only one square at a moment, but they can choose to move one, two, or all of them.
* Pawns do not capture diagonally-opposing pawns. They are only able to meet an opponent pawn face on and remain in place until a diagonal option becomes available.
This is an excellent way to learn the movements of the pawns and also allows you to work with other pawns. For this simple game, there is an additional pawn special situation called an en passant.
